PART B1 – ACTIVITY REPORT

Spencer’s curatorial statement claimed a space of self-determination within the institution; the space was awarded to the project Teasing the Furtive, with very few conditions. The conditions consisted mainly of managing and sticking to the project’s budget and beginning and end dates ; the budget was determined by the artist-organiser and the coordinator, on the basis of the needs of the project; objectives were fuzzy but stated in the project description sent to the funders.

Artists are remunerated on the assumption that, as artists, they will do something and document the gesture or action in one way or another, as documentation is an inherent part of furtive practice.

Furtivity, like any other form, requires certain conditions to thrive. In the context of an art institution, furtivity and critical thinking can be supported in a way that is mutually beneficial, both to the artist and the structure through autonomous, self-determined participation and sharing. Work is produced and then shared in the context of regular meetings, convened and facilitated by the artist-organizer (karen); the heterogeneous group of 11 artists might even reflect, on a micro scale, the composition of the centre’s active membership and how it can operate with minimal control, as long as values of trust and autonomy are shared. In the case of this year’s Teasing the Furtive, the structure consists of the following :

• subsistance funding to support the facilitator, artist fees, meetings, some travel and lodging for outside artists;
• an artist-organizer who likes people and who can manage a roving space for meetings (i.e. meetings are held in the artists’s homes and studios) at monthly intervals;
• an artist-organizer who can also step away in favour of other voices and leaderships;
• the right to not share, or disclose, but an understanding that people are interested in knowing about the individual’s furtive practice;
• artists who work alone and who do not have ready-made communities of studio-mates;

Structures and modalities have an effect on creativity ; uplifting effects? energy sinking effects? liberating effects? I sincerely look forward to continuing this exploration of structures through new projects, including the Artivistic summer residency and publication project.

Documents of the work will be collected at some point and shared, in some form or another, as per individual expressions, evocations, symbols, representations, presentations.

La densité et le motif all-over du texte imprimé constitue un matériau intéressant pour produire des blocs de courte-pointes de papier. Aussi, c’est un matériau produit en vaste quantité et très facile à obtenir; à l’occasion, il est même livré gratuitement à ma porte. Je le collectionne et le transforme depuis quelques années.

The density and all-over motif of the printed text offers an interesting material for the production of paper quilt pattern blocks. This material, produced in vast quantities, is very easy to obtain;  at times, it’s even delivered for free right to my door. I have been collecting and repurposing it for a few years.

I can show you many examples produced already; I have made quilt blocks out of many different printed outputs, including many pages of various erratic laser printer outputs, a copy of the full page of a Sherbrooke newspaper listing the names of all the people reached by karen spencer’s dream letters, including my name. It’s interesting how much time I spent looking for my own name in the long list of tiny printed names… maybe because I also collect occurrences of my own name as material?

Documenting the furtive word play : does not interfere with metro function, nor interrupt the passengers commute, but it did amuse me for a brief moment. Could not capture the repetition of the word for the length of the station, which, when pronounced quickly, sounds like a helicopter in flight.

Dommage que je n’ai pu capter la répétition du mot tout le long de la station dont le son rappellerait le bruit d’un hélicoptère en vol.

Considérant que la plupart des travailleurs occasionnels dans cette institution sont des artistes et que le rôle de l’art est de questionner ces frontières…

After having sat in the meeting for 3/4s of a day, this urge to act out took over and made me reproduce SP38′s graffiti on one of the chart boards using one of those crappy markers, and juxtaposition to the CCA logo.

Après plusieurs heures dans cette réunion, une envie forte de reproduire le graffiti de SP38 sur le bloc note avec un horrible marqueur noir, et juxtaposition avec le logo du CAC.

Viva! art action, édition de septembre 2009 – affiche peinte par l’artiste SP38 (l’artiste qui fait aussi la cuisine à Viva) appliquée sur le Belgo. L’affiche a été retirée par les travailleurs à l’entretien à peine quelque jour plus tard.

Joceline, Michelle, Denis, karen et moi avons passé un moment ensemble à l’atelier de karen où j’ai pu voir aussi ses dessins magnifiques ; le groupe était incomplet, on a bu un verre et on a parlé sans trop savoir où on allait. J’ai senti qu’on cherchait à mieux connaître nos pratiques respectives. Laurent, en France, a un excellent blogue.

Je sais que je participe au furtif en tant qu’artiste mais je demeure très proche de mon rôle de gestionnaire. ce mot sonne beaucoup comme fonctionnaire. Mais rassurez vous, je cherche à sortir des pièges de cette structure qui est efficace pour la production, mais irritante pour juste se raconter des histoires ou errer dans son espace sans but.

J’ai compris hier soir que ces rencontres servent de lieu de résonnance pour artistes qui font ce type de choses, d’où le titre de ce blogue. J’ai trouvé intéressant et complètement déstabilisant qu’on cherche à comprendre mon travail qui, comme j’ai tenté de vous expliqué (je n’y avais jamais pensé comme ça), n’avait jamais été imaginé comme de l’art. Pour dire la vérité, ce que je faisais, c’était de donner forme à mes frustrations de ne pas pouvoir faire de l’art à cause du travail, des enfants, du mari, de l’argent – c’est sorti comme ça. donc, sans jamais le vouloir, j’ai fait de l’art. Faut il que l’oeuvre soit toujours précédé d’une intention? c’est sûr que j’aime la reconnaissance de ce statut d’artiste mais je préfère ne pas participer de façon consciente à cette reconnaissane. je remercie karen de sa confiance.

L’autoreprésentation c’est pareil. jamais systématique. Ces moments de reflet ont tous été significatifs dans la resingularisation de mon identité après une période dans un dehors conventionné, en camouflage. c’est à cette époque que j’ai tout appris sur l’anxiété sans jamais vraiment trouvé de remède permanent. Avec du recul,  ce travail archi privé est le seul qui m’intéresse vraiment, mais aussi celui que je n’ai pas tellement envie de partager (de peur qu’il soit perçu comme narcissique), alors qu’il s’agit d’une collection de tactiques de survie, bien plus amusantes que celles déployées par mon corps pour m’alerter contre l’aliénation.

c’est donc intéressant de comprendre ce groupe comme un endroit pour partager des histoires, vérifier des idées, interpréter des actions, boire et manger.

J’ai apprécié les efforts de karen pour nous engager dans un cercle de storytelling. j’étais fatiguée hier et encore aujourd’hui et tellement heureuse de pouvoir être en votre compagnie même si je m’étais retirée un peu dans le creu de ce confortablissime futon.

Oui oui pour le dîner avec Todd, et bien sûr Laurent quand il viendra chez nous et tous les autres que j’ai aussi hâte de mieux connaître le travail.
